Job Boards: Then and Now
Do you ever wonder what job seekers did prior to the birth of job search sites? I’ve used job web sites more in my life than any other search method. It’s slightly difficult to even remember what life was like before job boards.
Today, the online job search is the primary method used by job seekers. It’s so simple nowadays to just go online and sift through the many possibilities posted for you.
These job search sites have progressed so much over the years, and they have become extremely easy to use. Users simply search by various criteria, such as location, salary, key word, industry, and so on. If you don’t like the results, you can narrow them down or broaden them based on search criteria.
I’m still relatively young, so these job search tools have been around for almost as long as I’ve been of legal age to have a job. But even I remember as a young teenager having to network and pass along my paper resume to potential employers.
During high school, I got my first few jobs through simple word of mouth and networking, mostly with the help of my parents. Do young people still use this method? I’m assuming they do, but not as frequently as back then.
I remember the first time I used job search sites, and they’ve greatly improved in the past decade or so. Back then, job boards were pretty much used to simply post job openings. Job seekers didn’t use the sites so much to actually contact potential employers.
Now, job search tools have evolved so much, and they’re even more resourceful than ever. You can search jobs, post resumes and cover letters and even correspond with potential employers.
Some people go through most of the hiring process via job web sites. It’s truly amazing how these tools have evolved, and I know they’ll continue to progress in the future.
